Georgia 2-year-old shoots and kills father while handing gun

A 2-year-old has accidentally shot and killed his father while handling a gun, according to a middle Georgia sheriff.

Jones County Sheriff Butch Reece tells local news outlets the shooting happened Thursday just outside Macon.

A shot to the back killed 28-year-old Jason Fowler, said Jones County Deputy Coroner Stacy Gardner. The shooting happened inside Fowler’s mobile home.

“The victim was sitting down, was shot in the back,” Reece told The Telegraph of Macon. “He calls someone and tells them he’d been shot. When deputies arrived, he’d passed away.”

The gun belonged to Fowler, Reece said. It’s not known how the child obtained the gun. The two were alone in the home when the shooting occurred.

The shooting remains under investigation.
