GBI: Robbery suspect dead in officer-involved shooting
EAST POINT - A man was killed Friday night after agents with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said he held up a store and tried to open fire on officers as he was trying to get away.
Several blocks of Cleveland Avenue SW in the East Point city limits bordering southwest Atlanta were shut down for several hours during the evening rush as investigators logged and combed the scene for evidence. The large crime scene all started along that road when investigators said the man went into the O'Reilly Auto Parts on the corner of Arcadia Street and robbed the store.
Investigators said the man then ran across the street to a coin laundry facility and tried to carjack a driver. That was around 3:20 p.m.
"He was attempting to carjack someone at the Coin Laundry. That's when he saw the officers and fired at the officers," said GBI spokesperson Nelly Miles.
Miles said the man fled behind the CSL Plasma and kept exchanging gunfire with officers, and was eventually shot and killed.
Atlanta Police confirmed the officers involved were from their department. Up to five officers fired shots at the suspect. The GBI said five officers will be placed on administrative leave which is standard procedure in these types of incidents.
The names of the robbery suspect and the officers has not immediately been released.
