GBI identifies suspect killed in shooting with DeKalb police

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has identified a man who was shot and killed late Wednesday during a shooting with DeKalb County police. 

The suspect has been identified as 27-year-old Quintas Harris. 

Police Chief James Conroy said four officers responded to a 911 call just before 11:30 p.m. about a man walking around and firing a gun at the Maple Walk apartment complex in unincorporated Decatur. Police described the man as "demented." 

Within minutes of receiving the 911 call, the first officer arrived at the scene. Authorities said as the officer approached the suspect, identified as Harris, he ran and jumped into a car. Then, three other officers arrived and confronted Harris, and that's when, according to investigators, the shooting began. 

According to the chief, all four officers fired shots, and Harris was hit. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died. 

Chief Conroy said one of the officers was shot in the hand. Paramedics rushed him to Grady Memorial Hospital. He is expected to recover. 

At this point, authorities aren't sure who opened fire first. All of the officers have been placed on routine paid administrative leave as the GBI investigates the case. 

The GBI said Harris also fired his gun at two other men prior to the officers arriving at the scene.
