Man taken into custody after SW Atlanta house fire

A man has been taken into custody as crews continue to work at the scene of a southwest Atlanta house fire early Monday morning.

The fire broke out before 6: 30 a.m. at a home on the 600 block of Garibaldi Street.

What we know:

Fire crews say that they arrived at the home and saw flames shooting from the first floor into the second floor of the home.

Firefighters were able to quickly get the blaze under control, but the home severely damaged the building.

"It was heavy fire throughout the first floor. They made an aggressive attack," Atlanta Assistant Fire Chief Greg Gray said. "It had extended up to the second floor and they were able to get it out in an offensive posture."

While the first reports led firefighters to believe there was a person trapped on the second floor, no one was found to be inside, officials said.

What we don't know:

FOX 5 cameras were rolling as police took a man that neighbors say is the owner of the home away in handcuffs.

Investigators have not released the man's identity or if he will be facing charges in connection to the fire.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined.
