A man shot and killed during an argument at a southwest Atlanta gas station will be laid to rest Thursday as the teen suspects accused of murdering him prepare to face a judge.

Police said Charlie McDaniel, 16, and his brother, Isaac, 15, shot Anthony Brooks, 50, last Thursday at a Shell gas station on Cambellton Road. Investigators said the two teens are gang members and have been arrested for 30 other crimes in the past.

The teens surrendered Sunday to police at Hunter Hill First Missionary Baptist Church. The church pastor Christopher Wimberly said their mother called police. He prayed for her and her boys during the arrest.

"I was saddened. I was shocked. It was like a whirlwind," Wimberly said. "Both of them said, 'we are not running. We're turning ourselves in. We just came here for prayer.'"

FOX 5's Marissa Mitchell spoke with Brooks' mother and son Sunday following the suspects' arrest. They expressed gratitude for the public's support and detectives' work. Relatives also described Brooks as a loving grandfather and father who loved football and cartoons.

Brooks' celebration of life service is scheduled for Thursday afternoon at Impacting Generations Covenant Church on Fairburn Road.

Brooks was well known and beloved throughout his Ben Hill community. Friend Marilyn Avery said he helped everyone at the Shell gas station, by pumping gas and cleaning outside of the store. She, and others, said they don't understand why anyone would want to take his life.

"Everybody knew him at the store. It was like he was family," Avery said.

Community members have set up a makeshift memorial for Brooks at the Shell gas station where he was shot.

Police said the McDaniel brothers are in custody at the Youth Detention Center and are charged with murder.
