Vine City playground fire intentionally set, officials say
ATLANTA - A Vine City playground was burned down Tuesday afternoon. What's worse is, Atlanta officials believe the fire was set on purpose.
What we know:
SKYFOX 5 flew over a fire at June Elois Mundy Park at around 4 p.m. on Tuesday. Within minutes, firefighters were at the scene putting it out.
But, the fire raged just long enough for the equipment to be melted and community green space to be scorched.
What they're saying:
"It's just sad that this happened," said neighbor Linda Adams.
Atlanta City Council member Byron Amos said it was disheartening to hear what happened to a space he fought so hard for.
"I’m in City Hall. Got a call that the park was on fire, June Mundy Park. Came here to find out that someone had set a fire on the playground of the park," he explained. "This park is a special place."
Amos, who lives nearby, said he was the head of the Vine City Civic Association that built the park.
"The community and I got together, and out of a dirt field we created this park," he said.

Amos said seeing their hard work in ashes was difficult, especially on a warm afternoon like Tuesday's when many kids in the neighborhood would have been eager to play outside after school.
Adams said it was also a loss for the community's senior citizens.
"We got new benches, trees, and we were getting ready to plan some stuff for the seniors," Adams said. "We were gonna do the ribbon cutting next week."
What's next:
The next phase is to find funding to rebuild the park.
While investigators work to determine the cause of the fire, anyone with information is strongly encouraged to reach out to the Atlanta Police Department.
