Family and friends of 24-year-old Shantrelle Monroe gathered in Hairston Park on Saturday to pray that the young woman’s killer will be found.

Monroe was shot in a wooded area behind a playground inside the Mainstreet housing subdivision off Hairston Rd. DeKalb County Police believe she was lured to her death. The shooter is still on the run.

Her mother Sonya Woods said the moment she learned her daughter was killed was heart-wrenching.

“To have Dekalb County Police come to your door and say your loved one, my baby, that she is gone, that was very painful,” Woods said. “I thank God for the 24 years I had with her.”

Monroe’s stepmother was emotional during the vigil and said she and her family will not stop looking for answers until the shooter is found.

“We will get justice for Shantrelle,” said Debra Monroe. “You can run and try to hide, but God is gonna make sure we get justice for that queen.”

Shantrelle’s mother also had a message for her daughter’s killer: “I don't know why you took her life, I really don't, it is what it is, but I forgive you and turn yourself in.” Woods said.
