A traffic stop on Interstate 85 led to a big drug bust for the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies said they were able to take five pounds of meth off the streets after discovering it in the backpack of one of the men in a car stopped for tailgating.

Robert Alexander, 50, and Darius Pass, 24, both of Columbus, Georgia, were booked into the Coweta County Jail without bond on trafficking and firearms charges.

An investigator working what is called interdiction along the interstate last Thursday spotted the Nissan Altima following a car too closely. The deputy said while talking to the men when first pulled over they both appeared to be sweating even though the AC was running. They said they had just left Atlanta and were headed home.

Investigators said they eventually found a backpack sitting behind their seats containing the five pounds of meth.

“Street value was approximately $30,000,” Lt. Col. James Yarbrough of the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office said.

Also seized was $500 and a 9mm handgun.
