The Gwinnett Department of Corrections celebrates its first graduating class from its inmate welding program.

Thirteen inmates completed an 18-week program, earning a certificate in gas metal arc welding from Gwinnett Tech.

This first class of graduates maintained an "A" average.

The participant selected as valedictorian in the program had two big reasons to celebrate.

If the inmates choose to return to school after their release, the credits earned during the course can transfer back to Gwinnett Tech as hours that they can use toward a diploma.
