Community raises money, awareness for Ralph David Abernathy III's cancer fight

A community of activists and citizens is rallying behind the son of a local civil rights icon.

The Rev. Ralph David Abernathy III has been battling liver cancer for years. And now his friends, family and supporters are joining forces to help him pay for mounting medical bills.

They gathered Sunday at Lindsay Street Baptist Church in Atlanta. There, they prayed and sang for Abernathy's healing. His family also attended the service, which included a powerful sermon from the activist. Abernathy's father, Ralph David Abernathy, famously worked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the Civil Rights Movement. In his speech, Abernathy III encouraged young people to continue fighting for social and racial equality.

Lindsay Street Baptist Church and other local congregations collected donations for Abernathy. Organizers told FOX 5 they hope to raise at least $100,000.
