First responders rescue child trapped in Buckhead

Atlanta police and other first responders joined forces to rescue a child who fell down a steep embankment while sledding in Buckhead.

Body cameras caught the moment when first responders rescued a boy who became trapped near Peachtree Creek while playing in the snow in Buckhead.

Officials say the rescue happened during the first snowstorm on the afternoon of Jan. 10.

What we know:

Atlanta police say officers were called to the 1000 block of Northcliffe Drive for what they believed was a water rescue.

When they got to the scene, they were told by witnesses that a child had fallen into a steep embankment while sledding near the creek and was stranded.

Working together, members of the Atlanta Police Department, the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department, and Grady EMTs came up with a plan to pull the boy to safety.

The first responders were able to get to the boy, put him on a stretcher and cover him up to keep him warm.

The group was able to pull the stretcher up the embankment and carry the boy to safety.

"We're going to get you warmed up OK?" one first responder is heard on the video telling the boy.

"We're proud of you for being brave," another said.

What we don't know:

The child was taken to a local hospital for treatment for a leg injury. His current condition is not known.

What they're saying:

The successful outcome of this incident is a fine example of the commitment that first responders make every day to keep our communities safe, the Atlanta Police Department wrote on Facebook. "Despite a winter storm, inclement weather, and cold temperatures, first responders see to it that emergency calls are answered when citizens need their assistance."
