Austell man remembers his time at Ground Zero
AUSTELL, Ga. - Many in Georgia will be remembering the lives lost on September 11, 2001 this weekend. Many still remember where they were when they heard the news.
One man in Austell spent eight months at ground zero. He had the heartbreaking task of working with a K-9 to find the bodies of those killed and he hasn’t forgotten. He still works to this day to honor the lives lost.
Joe Grimaldi is training a new German Shepherd named Kilo. He is named for the K-9 he used as a volunteer at the World Trade Center site after the September 11 attack. When the towers, fell Grimaldi and Kilo went.
After 15 years, Kilo is long gone, but for Grimaldi the memories, some nightmarish, are not. He said his search dog Kilo never suffered ill effects from his weeks on what they called the pile, but he said he has.
Grimaldi misses Kilo and is working hard with the new Kilo.
