When rescuers of the Audubon Society of Portland responded to a call of a trapped red-breasted merganser stuck in a fishing line this week, they were surprised to arrive and discover a bald eagle also trapped alongside it.

According to the Audubon Society Facebook page, the bald eagle saw the merganser, swooped down and tried to make it a meal, but instead got caught in the very same fishing line.  Lacy Campbell from the Wildlife Care Center used the limited tools she had in her possession, entered the Willamette and safely rescued the Bald Eagle and Merganser. Both were brought into a care center for treatment, the bald eagle survived the rescue, the merganser did not. The 12 pound female bald eagle was released Sunday back into the wild.
