Atlanta police probe overnight shooting at southwest apartments

Atlanta police are investigating an overnight shooting that damaged several units at a southwest Atlanta apartment complex. The gunfire broke out around midnight at the Apple Tree Apartments off Campbellton Road. Breaking news.

Atlanta police are investigating a shooting that left a man critically injured and caused heavy damage at a southwest Atlanta apartment complex.

Officers responded to reports of gunfire around 12:26 a.m. Thursday in the 2500 block of Campbellton Road SW.

What we know:

When they arrived, they found several apartments struck by bullets, including one unit with extensive damage and blood visible inside. A 911 caller told police their vehicle was also hit by gunfire while they tried to take cover.

Investigators collected multiple shell casings at the scene, including evidence from both handguns and rifles. A witness gave officers a description of a suspect, leading to the detention of a 15-year-old male.

Shortly after the shooting, a man with four gunshot wounds to the abdomen arrived at Grady Memorial Hospital. He was listed in critical condition.

The investigation remains active as detectives work to determine what led to the gunfire.

What we don't know:

The name of the person detained has not been released and no information about the victim or the circumstances around the shooting has been released.
