An Atlanta police pursuit came to a crashing end early Wednesday.

Investigators told FOX 5 that around 2 a.m. an officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that they say made an illegal U-turn at the intersection of Piedmont Road and Lakeshore Drive.

The driver handed over a license that was clearly not his, police said. When they ordered him to step out of the vehicle, he put his foot to the gas and sped off, getting on the highway.

During the chase, both the unmarked police cruiser and the car the fleeing driver was in launched over an embankment on Armour Drive.

Tow trucks used a crane to lift both vehicles out to the street. They were crushed.

The officer and fleeing suspect managed to free themselves from the twisted wreckage. The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Christopher Cage, was apprehended trying to flee.

Both Cage and the officer had minor injuries and were transported to Grady Hospital.

Cage has been charged with failure to obey a traffic control device, driving with a suspended license, reckless driving, and fleeing and attempting to elude.

Police are still investigating the incident.
