The 6-year-old girl who was shot by her younger brother Monday evening has died, Paulding County deputies said.

Deputies responded to a home on Laurelcrest Lane in Dallas around 5:47 p.m. Monday. Deputies said they found the young girl suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. She was rushed to an Atlanta hospital in critical condition.

Investigators learned the girl’s 4-year-old brother found a handgun in the console of a vehicle in the family’s driveway and accidentally fired a shot. The children’s mother was briefly distracted outside the vehicle attempting to find out why it wouldn’t start at the time of the shooting, investigators said.

"Our hearts break for this family and we hope God puts his healing hands around them during this difficult time," Sheriff Gary Gulledge was quoted as saying in a release sent to FOX 5 News. "We want to remind everyone to keep their firearms unloaded and secured in an area away from children to ensure that this never happens again."

Detectives said no charges will be filed in the case.
