A major animal rescue took place Monday morning in Barnesville.

Volunteers with Angels Among Us Pet Rescue (AAUPR) saved the lives of 25 animals, 15 of those being dogs, in an underfunded shelter. They were due to be euthanized this week.

"The shelter is now completely empty for the very first time in a long time," said Megan Bowman with AAUPR.

AAUPR said the animals are sick and in need of immediate attention.

The pet rescue group picked up the dogs and brought them to metro Atlanta where they are being treated and cared for. Once the animals are medically cleared, they will go into volunteer foster homes in and around Atlanta.

Angels Among Us Pet Rescue is the largest foster-based animal rescue in the Southeast.
