2 arrested in $4K Walmart shoplifting attempt in Duluth

A man and woman were recently arrested by Duluth police after allegedly stealing more than $4,000 in merchandise from a local Walmart.
DULUTH, Ga. - A shoplifting attempt at a local Walmart in Duluth was thwarted by quick-acting officers, resulting in the arrest of two individuals and the recovery of over $4,000 in merchandise. The incident unfolded when a store manager alerted officers on patrol to the suspects' activities.
What we know:
As officers approached, the male suspect abandoned the cart filled with unpaid items and attempted to run away. However, he was swiftly apprehended, according to the Duluth Police Department. During a search, officers discovered he was carrying a wallet that did not belong to him.
Simultaneously, a female suspect, also identified by the manager, fled the scene. After a brief pursuit, officers also successfully apprehended her. Initially, she provided false identification, but officers utilized investigative tools to confirm her true identity, uncovering several outstanding warrants in the process.
Both suspects admitted to recent fentanyl use and were transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation. After being cleared by medical staff, they were taken to the Gwinnett County Jail.
The stolen merchandise was recovered and returned to Walmart.
