Metro Atlanta students aim skyward for national honors

“Aim for the sky and try not to miss." That's the motto of the Creekview Aeronautics Team, a group of talented high school students whose passion for their craft has launched them into a national championship this weekend.

Coach Tim Smyrl and the team are gearing up for the competition and shared with FOX 5 just what makes the program so special.

Coach Smyrl says interest in the team took off when Creekview Aeronautics qualified for the Team America Rocketry Challenge in 2014, winning the National Championship two years later. Smyrl says the competition is fun, but there’s something even more rewarding:

“The best thing is when they come back from a couple years in college and they are aerospace engineering majors, chemical engineering majors, we even had one girl who led our national championship team and she is an art major at SCAD so they go to all different areas but it teaches them how to problem solve and ultimately be successful. “

Smyrl says it’s a program that’s unique but inspires a future generation of scholars and leaders.

Creekview Aeronautics will compete in the Team America Rocketry Challenge this Saturday and we'll certainly be rooting for them.
