Good Day explores Forsyth County's Sawnee Mountain Preserve

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. (FOX 5 Atlanta) - You know the Good Day Atlanta team is always on the hunt for places to enjoy the great outdoors, especially now that the weather is warmer, the days are getting longer, and Spring Break week is finally here.  And this morning, we discovered a place with more than 800 acres to explore — and, amazingly, it’s located within 50 miles of Atlanta.

We’re talking about Forsyth County’s Sawnee Mountain Preserve, featuring miles of hiking trails and an interactive Visitor Center filled with exhibits highlighting the fascinating history of Sawnee Mountain.  The preserve’s trails range in ability from easy to difficult and include the three-and-a-half-mile Indian Seats Trail, which leads to a natural rock formation known as the Indian Seats and offers incredible views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  Exploring the trails also leads to clues about the mountain’s past, including abandoned gold mines along the way.

The award-winning Visitor Center is a good place to start when visiting the preserve and is located at 4075 Spot Road in Cumming.  The center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays, and admission is free.
