Atlanta Rollergirls home team opens 2018 season with new name

ATLANTA - They’re back for a new season with a brand-new name – but don’t worry, the Atlanta Rollergirls have the same competitive attitude and the same entertaining moves on the flat track!

Starting with its home opening bout on Saturday, January 27 at 5 p.m., the home team formerly known as the Sake Tuyas will now be known as the Glamma Rays.  Members say they wanted to choose a new name that reflected their dedication to inclusion, and say a play on scientific “Gamma Rays” (which have the most energy of any wave in the electromagnetic spectrum) is a perfect fit.  The Atlanta Rollergirls have been Atlanta’s only internationally competitive flat track roller derby league since 2008, and is made up of volunteer athletes who practice several hours a week and compete at the Yaarab Shrine Center at 400 Ponce De Leon Avenue in Atlanta.  The Atlanta Rollergirls all-star team, called the Dirty South Derby Girls, is currently ranked 15th internationally and represents Atlanta in national and international bouts.
