Atlanta weather: Winter chill persists as ice continues to melt
ATLANTA - North Georgia residents should prepare for a mix of chilly temperatures, gusty winds, and scattered rain showers in the coming days, according to FOX 5 Storm Team meteorologist Jonathan Stacey.
The FOX 5 Storm Team is taking a look at the next seven days.
Will it snow in Atlanta on Friday?
What we know:
No, but expect another chilly morning with significant wind chill. With wind chill values dipping into the low 20s and teens in some areas, Stacey warns that the cold will feel even more biting due to gusty winds out of the west. "Wind chill values—this is what the air feels like when you consider the chilly air and the wind. We have a pretty solid wind coming in out of the West," Stacey explained.
Timeline:
For those stepping out early, especially children heading to school, heavy coats are a must. "By tomorrow morning, around 6:00, the kids who are getting up and going back to school will need a thick coat because it’s going to feel quite cold out there," he said. In parts of Northeast Georgia, wind chill values could feel as low as 16°F before sunrise.
Afternoon highs will offer little reprieve, with temperatures climbing into the low 40s, but strong winds will make it feel closer to freezing. "By the time the sun goes down, it will feel like 22° in Northwest Georgia and even colder in the mountains," Stacey said.
Weekend outlook: Gradual warm-up, increasing clouds
What they're saying:
As the weekend progresses, temperatures will inch upwards. Friday and Saturday are expected to remain below average, with highs in the mid-40s. Winds are forecasted to die down by Saturday afternoon, providing some relief.
Sunday will start on a clearer note, but conditions will shift as the day progresses. "Big changes that you will actually be able to feel come by way of cloud cover moving in Sunday going into Monday," Stacey noted. Temperatures are expected to reach the low 50s by Sunday afternoon.
Wet start to the workweek
What's next:
Rain returns to the forecast Sunday evening, as a system moving in from the Tennessee Valley brings scattered showers. "By Monday morning, we’re looking at a fairly wet commute to start," Stacey said. The rain will persist into the afternoon, although coverage is expected to become more isolated by evening.
Rainfall amounts will likely remain under a half-inch in most areas, Stacey reported. "Estimates show less than a quarter of an inch in Atlanta and slightly higher totals in areas like Carrollton, depending on where cells linger," he added.
Is there another winter storm coming?
Big picture view:
After the rain clears, high pressure will bring sunnier conditions by Tuesday and Wednesday, with temperatures climbing to the mid-50s. However, another chance of rain is forecast for Thursday.
"Here’s a look at your FOX 5 Storm Team 7-day forecast," Stacey said. "Tomorrow’s high will be 45°, with breezy conditions throughout the afternoon. By Saturday, we’re nearing 50°, and Sunday will hit 52° before showers return Monday. We’ll dry out midweek with plenty of sunshine, but keep an umbrella handy for next Thursday."
