ATHENS, Ga. - Former University of Georgia football coach and athletic director Vince Dooley told Fox 5 he was surprised to learn that Mark Richt is stepping down from the head coaching job. "I was somewhat surprised to read what was evidently mutually agreed upon," said Dooley, "and if that is the case then I'm happy for the University and I'm especially happy for Mark Richt."
Dooley hired Richt as coach fifteen years ago, when Dooley was serving as the University's athletic director. Dooley says he has spoken to Richt since the announcement, but would not get into specifics about what they discussed. "I told Mark when he was hired as a football coach... I was proud of him that day and I'm just as proud or even more so of him today," said Dooley.
Dooley said given the impact that Richt has had on the UGA football program and the community, his legacy is solid. "His legacy is well-established off the field and on the field," said Dooley.
