ROME, Ga. (FOX 5 Atlanta) - The Darlington School’s 4-Star offensive tackle Tate Ratledge says it’s coming down to Tennessee and Georgia. The 5th overall OT prospect in the nation told our Rusty Mansell that he’ll make his decision live on FOX 5’s Good Day Atlanta broadcast Monday, May 13.
Ratledge was in Athens for the G-Day spring scrimmage and since that time he’s apparently been warming to the UGA coaching staff.
"It was really good just talking to (offensive line) coach (Sam) Pittman and (head) coach (Kirby) Smart after and talking to some of the recruits there,” Ratledge told Mansell and 247Sports.
“The relationship with Coach Pittman stands out a lot because he’s been recruiting me for about four years now, it seems like. And I guess I just keep building relationships with him and Coach Smart and all the other coaches there.
It appears that UGA’s upcoming “losses” could be a recruiting tool for the Bulldogs’ coaching staff.
“(Pittman) says that they’re going to lose two tackles this year, most likely, in Isaiah Wilson and Andrew Thomas. And he said that I’m his number-one priority on his offensive line to sign in this class. That’s really what he tells me. That’s really his message to me.” Ratledge said.
And although Ratledge’s family has deep rooting ties to the Volunteers, Pittman has given Georgia a shot with the big lineman.
“Building this relationship with Coach (Sam) Pittman, talking to him, he is not really a let’s talk all about football guy, he is more of a personable guy, that wants to get to know you, not just about football,” he said.
Last year Georgia scored a potential UT commit in Cade Mays when the 5-star lineman de-committed from Tennessee and chose to attend school in Athens instead. Kirby Smart would be thrilled with a repeat performance on Monday.
Sports anchor Cody Chaffins will be in Rome for the announcement, which can be seen live on FOX 5 and on the FOX 5 Atlanta Facebook page.
