UPDATE: The yard sale to benefit the Ballard family started at 7:00 a.m. Saturday.

Friends organized a massive yard sale to help an Atlanta family who lost their wife and mother to a mystery disease.  Stefanie Ballard died in early August after a short illness that doctors still haven't identified. She fell ill after spending a day at the pool with her two children.

"A lot of people are affected by it and wanted to do something," explained Karen Anderson, who helped put on the yard sale.  "Nobody knew what to do.  We all want to do something and so this gave the community the opportunity to do something for them."

A Go Fund Me account has raised over $80,000 and her friends want to add to that total.  Proceeds from the sale will be donated to Stefanie's husband Pete to help with the family's expenses.

"They don't have to worry if they have medical bills or any expenses that have happened because of Stefanie's illness.  We want him to be able to focus on his children really and not worry about those bills," added Anderson.

Thousands of items have been donated from all across Atlanta for the yard sale. They include clothing, household items, furniture, sporting goods, appliances and much more. The sale runs through early afternoon and is being held in the parking lot of the SR Appliance Showroom at 2710 Apple Valley Road in Brookhaven.
