Trump promises action on immigration at Dallas rally
DALLAS - GOP frontrunner Donald Trump brought his freewheeling campaign to Dallas on Monday with a rally at the American Airlines Center that was light on policy specifics but heavy on all things Donald.
"So, the polls come out and we are killing it,” Trump said. “We are really killing it."
An estimated 20,000 tickets had been distributed for the event, but the upper level of the AAC was mostly empty. The lower and middle seating bowls were full for the rally, along with the floor of the arena.
Trump spoke for more than an hour.
The biggest applause line of the night came when Trump told the crowd that illegal immigration was a problem that has to be dealt with.
“We have to build a wall folks,” Trump said. “A wall works.”
Trump said told the people in attendance they aren’t the "silent majority" but rather the "noisy" majority.
Trump praised Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones before launching into an unscripted speech to the crowd, joking that he didn’t have a teleprompter.
"Every time I speak they put me on live television so I have to make different speeches," Trump said.
Trump praised former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who exited the race last week, before briefly going after President Obama.
"We have a president who doesn't know what the hell he's doing,” Trump said.
Trump took aim at a host of other targets, including Jeb Bush and other Republicans.
“Who would you rather have: Jeb or Trump?” Trump asked the crowd.
Trump mentioned his tax policy which would cut taxes for some like middle income Americans, but raise taxes on “hedge fund guys.” Trump called it a pro-growth plan.
He reminded the crowd that he is funding his own campaign and is not beholden to donors.
“I have guys offering me millions and millions of dollars,” said Trump. “You know, when you’re in number one place, then bloodsuckers come out.”
Trump also mentioned his hair, something of a regular occurrence on the trail.
"By the way in the back -- can you see it's really my hair?"
