FBI identifies suspect in Atlanta robbery spree

For months, a 32-year-old master of disguise targeted businesses across metro Atlanta. The FBI has released surveillance footage of Tracy Mingo—who investigators say committed the robberies while posing as a construction worker, a security guard, and a medical professional in scrubs.

A 32-year-old master of disguise who investigators said used a series of professional disguises to carry out nearly a dozen armed robberies across the metro Atlanta area over the last three months.

What we know:

Tracy Mingo was captured on Jan. 2. The FBI’s Violent Crime Squad captured Tracy Mingo on Jan. 2 in Doraville. Agents moved in to arrest Mingo as he was allegedly preparing to rob another business. Supervisory Agent Matthew Komar stated that when the team realized Mingo was casing another business, they felt it was necessary to take the opportunity and go in as soon as possible.

The backstory:

Investigators have connected Mingo to at least 11 armed robberies occurring between October and the end of the year. To blend in, Mingo allegedly donned various outfits, appearing in surveillance images dressed as a construction worker, a security guard, and a nurse wearing medical scrubs.

According to the FBI, Mingo’s pattern involved casing businesses to monitor staffing levels and customer traffic. Agent Komar noted that Mingo specifically looked for vulnerabilities.

"He's been targeting female employees. Especially at nighttime, when closing. There's not as many customers around," said FBI Supervisory Agent Matthew Komar.

The FBI says Mingo typically made off with between $2,000 and $3,000 per robbery. Notable incidents linked to the investigation include a mid-December robbery at a Family Dollar on Bouldercrest Road and a late December robbery at a Subway restaurant in Marietta. A few days later, he allegedly targeted another Family Dollar on Candler Road in Decatur.

"When we realized that he was casing another business, we thought that was necessary to kind of take that opportunity and go in as soon as possible," said Agent Komar.

What's next:

Mingo is currently held in the Fulton County Jail on numerous charges, including armed robbery, kidnapping, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and terroristic threats.
