A small plane made an emergency landing on Highway 316 Monday afternoon in Gwinnett County.

Gwinnett Police Department said the plane landed near Harbins Road and was later pulled into the median.

A FOX 5 viewer captured images of the plane, which appears to be painted to look like a World War II aircraft, shortly after it landed on the highway as cars trailed behind.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the Sonex experimental, amateur-built aircraft made an emergency landing at 12:45 p.m., three miles east of Gwinnett County Airport. The plane was en route to the airport before the incident.

The pilot, who was the only person aboard the flight, said the engine just stopped mid-flight, leading to the surprise landing.

The Federal Aviation Administration is handling the investigation.
