Deadly domestic violence shooting in McDonough

Two are dead after what police say was a deadly domestic incident and SWAT situation in a Henry County neighborhood.

Authorities say the woman had left the home during an argument when her husband followed her outside and shot her. He then went back inside the home. As police secured the area, the Henry County SWAT Team was activated. When officers entered the home later, they discovered the husband dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

All roads into the subdivision were briefly closed Monday morning as officers worked the scene, but the area has since been cleared and declared safe. No one else was directly involved in the incident.

What they're saying:

"This is a quiet neighborhood people are to themselves. I just lost cousins to domestic violence so it's crazy," said neighbor Briana Hodges.

"I didn't know them personally but I always spoke to them saying hi to the husband when he would leave and I waved to the wife but I didn't really know them know them," said Latasha Edmondson.

There will be a vigil Monday night near the mailboxes for the family.

"We're just praying that restoration comes. We're praying that healing comes," said Michael Strickland, a pastor at Victory Tabernacle Church International.

What we don't know:

Police have not released the names or ages of the man and woman as of early Monday afternoon.

Big picture view:

Although there is no official national count of murder-suicides in the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Violent Death Reporting System estimates an average of 1,000 to 1,500 people die each year in murder-suicides.

Additionally, most murder-suicides involve an intimate partner and the victim is typically a female when an intimate partner is involved.
