Warming shelters open up ahead of winter weather

The brutal temperatures could be dangerous for people who don't have heat. The city of Atlanta is joining several municipalities in opening warming shelters in advance of the Arctic blast.

Starting Thursday night, temperatures will dip to dangerously cold levels and may not get above freezing for about three days

Public warming centers are available for anyone in need of shelter in metro Atlanta.

Here are a list of Georgia warming centers and when they'll be open:

ATLANTA

When: 8 p.m. Dec. 22 to 9 a.m. Dec. 28

Warming shelters open as temperatures drop

Thousands of Georgians are without power as the coldest air in years freezes the Peach State. Many municipalities, like the city of Atlanta, have opened warming shelters for those who need it.

BARTOW COUNTY

When: 9 p.m. Dec. 22 - 26

Where: Forever Blessed Church; 51 Maple Ridge Drive, Cartersville

CHEROKEE COUNTY

When: 6 p.m. Dec. 23 - 25

Where: Action Church; 271 Marietta Road, Canton

*Dinner and breakfast provided

CLAYTON COUNTY

When: noon Dec. 23 until Dec. 26

Where: Sequoyah Middle School, 95 Valley Hill Rd., Riverdale, GA 30274

DEKALB COUNTY

When: 24 hrs until 7 a.m. Dec. 28

Where: Exchange Park Recreation Center, 2771 Columbia Drive, Decatur; Mason Mill Recreation Center, 1340 McConnell Drive, Decatur; Tobie Grant, 593 Parkdale Drive, Scottdale

DAWSON COUNTY

When: 7 p.m. Dec. 23 - 25

Where: Rock Creek Park; 445 Martin Road, Dawsonville

ROCKDALE COUNTY

When: 7 p.m. Dec. 22 - 25

Where: J.P Carr Gym; Hardin St SW, Conyers

GEORGIA STATE PARKS

Officials will open warming centers in 23 state parks for public use while waiving the usual ParkPass fees. A full map of the warming stations and the days they are available can be found here.
