Maryland firefighters rescue 11-year-old boy trapped in mud
HYATTSVILLE, Md. - Firefighters in Maryland were called to rescue an 11-year-old boy who got stuck waist-deep in mud while playing in a wooded area. It happened Sunday in Hyattsville, Maryland.
The boy, Eric Henderson, said he and a group of friends were walking through the woods when another boy's feet got stuck. Eric used his hands to dig out his friend's feet, but then realized he was trapped himself. He tried to free himself the same way, but was too deep in the mud.
His friends ran for help, and police were called. But the officer who responded couldn't free Eric, so he called in a technical resue team from the fire department. "I was starting to feel cold, then I realized I just wated to stay calm," Eric said.
Firefighters put a sheet around Eric to keep him as warm as possible, then starting digging him out. It took a half-hour to free him. The boy was not injured. But Eric's mother said she took one look at the clothes and shoes he was wearing when it happened, and decided just to throw them out.
