Man hurt, pets killed in Gwinnett County house fire

A man was hurt and several pets were killed after a fire broke out inside a Gwinnett County home early Friday morning.

Firefighters responded to the 1300 block of Ashbrook Drive in unincorporated Lawrenceville shortly after 2 a.m. Friday after a 911 caller reported the garage was on fire.

Responding firefighters arrived to find heavy flames and the fire had already vented the roof. The flames were so strong that firefighters weren't initially able to enter the home to battle the blaze.

Officials said two people were sleeping when the fire began. They both made it out safely, but one went back inside to rescue a dog.

The man found the dog and sustained minor burns while rescuing the pet. Sadly, the dog didn't survive. A second dog and cat were also killed in the fire.

Firefighters are working to learn what caused the fire. The house was completely destroyed in the blaze.
