Man found shot to death at Powder Springs home, police say

Police are investigating after a man was found shot to death outside a Powder Springs home late Friday night, rattling residents in a neighborhood where neighbors say violent crime is unheard of.

What we know:

Powder Springs Police Department officers responded to a home in the 3000 block of Mustang Drive shortly before 9:00 p.m. on Friday.

Officers found a man who had been shot, and he died at the scene, police said.

Detectives from the Cobb County Police Department were called to the location to take over the primary investigation, which remains active and ongoing.

Officials emphasized that there is no perceived threat or active danger to the surrounding community.

What they're saying:

The gunfire erupted in a quiet residential community where families and young children frequently spend time outside. Neighbor Georgia Garcia told FOX 5’s Hernan Gutierrez she was celebrating her daughter’s birthday when she heard loud noises she initially mistook for fireworks.

"We came out and we checked, and we saw the body where that SUV is," Garcia said. "We saw the body over there, and that's when we called 911."

Garcia described the experience as deeply unsettling for her household, especially with a 2-year-old grandson and young neighborhood children playing outdoors regularly.

"This is the first time we hear an incident like this, and this neighborhood was—because it's scary now—was pretty safe," Garcia said. "I was shaking a lot, and I'm still kind of shaky."

Other longtime residents along Mustang Drive expressed similar disbelief. Fayelle Ward, who lives down the street, said she had no idea a fatal shooting had occurred just hours earlier.

"It seems very quiet, very calm. I've never felt unsafe in this neighborhood at all, so that's shocking," Ward said. "It's concerning. It's also really difficult for me to believe because nothing ever happens around here."

What we don't know:

Authorities have not publicly identified the victim or released his age pending next-of-kin notification.

Police have not named any suspects or announced an arrest in connection with the shooting.

Investigators have not disclosed what led up to the gunfire or whether the shooting occurred inside or outside the home.

Investigators are asking anyone with details regarding the incident to contact the Cobb County Police Department at 770-499-3945.
