Police said the man who shot at a Brookhaven police sergeant has surrendered.

Brandon Barabino was booked into the DeKalb County Jail on aggravated assault charges on Friday.

The shooting happened late Tuesday night at the intersection of Briarcliff Road and North Druid Hills. Brookhaven Police Sergeant Lonnie Napier was doing some paperwork in front of a restaurant when someone approached him saying there was an armed robbery taking place in the back of the strip mall, according to investigators.

Police said one of the victims told Napier that the gunman fired at two people and ran into an apartment complex. The sergeant found a suspicious vehicle there and tried to run the tag, but a driver pulled out a gun and opened fire on Napier. The bullet shattered a window on the patrol car, missing the officer’s head by inches.

Officers tried to chase the vehicle, but they lost him. The driver eventually flipped the car and got away. Barabino, who police believe was that driver, will remain in jail without bail.
