Jail officer arrested for sexual assualt in Meriweather County

A jail officer was arrested and charged with sexual assault, according to the Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office.

Stephen Robert Sheely, 22, is charged with Violation of Oath by a Public Officer, Aggravated Sexual Battery, Sexual Assault by Person of Law Enforcement, and two counts of Sexual Battery.

“My administrative command received information that one of our jail officers possibly was involved in some illegal contact with a female inmate. The source of this information did not come from the inmate herself, but came about through other means. We launched a criminal investigation into the allegations made immediately. Through the investigation we developed probable cause to substantiate the issuance of arrest warrants of this jail officer. This was done with thoroughness and expedience on the part of our investigative division. Once the warrants were issued our investigators along with the assistance of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office served the arrest warrants in Harris County, Ga. The jail officer was transported to the Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office and booked on the charges filed on August 9th, 2017. His employment with the Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office was terminated on the same date.” Sheriff Smith stated.

“I take this very seriously when one of our own not only violates the law and public’s trust but also jeopardizes the integrity of this office. I will not tolerate this behavior under my administration. We have conferred with our local District Attorney’s Office throughout this investigation and the case will be submitted as any other criminal violation for prosecution.” Sheriff Smith advised.
