Image of Asia: Student activists appear in court in Myanmar

In this photo by Khin Maung Win, a university student arrested while protesting a new education law in Myanmar talks with his mother upon arrival at a court in Tharyarwaddy township, north of Yangon. Eleven detainees, including nine current students, were granted bail in court appearances Tuesday after the activists were arrested at Letpadan in March. Criminal charges were filed against 69 people after police stopped the peaceful protests to prevent the protesters from marching into Yangon. The students say the new law undermines the autonomy of universities by putting all decisions about education policy and curriculum in the hands of a group largely made of government ministers.
