A Lawrenceville family, with two children, safely escaped their home soon after it caught fire Thursday morning. However, they said two pets were still inside.

The family was asleep when the fire broke out and woke up after hearing their smoke alarms and the sound of breaking glass. Gwinnett County Firefighters arrived to see smoke coming out of the two-story home and were able to control the flames within 20 minutes. The fire damaged part of the living room, sending smoke all the way to the second floor.

Incense, which was part of a religious shrine, was left burning unattended and is said to be the cause of the fire.

Firefighters rescued the family’s dog, but were not able to find the cat. The cat is believed to have run outside earlier.
