GBI investigate deputy-involved shooting in Troup County

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said a suspect wanted in connection to the death of a Troup County woman was shot and killed by a law enforcement officers after firing at the officers during a manhunt.

Deputies were dispatched around 2:49 p.m. Thursday to the 5000 block of Riverside Lane after reports of a woman shot. The Troup County Sheriff's Office said they found the woman dead at the scene from apparent gunshot wounds.

The woman's husband told deputies his wife was standing outside with her adult brother when he heard three shots. Deputies said the husband then spotted the man running into the woods towards West Point Lake along with three dogs.

Deputies and officers swarmed the area where the husband last saw the suspect. They caught up to him at a boat dock but saw no sign of movement. After telling the man to show his hands, deputies said he pointed a gun at them and opened fire.

Deputies said they returned fire, striking the suspect, who went into the water. The deputy tried to pull the man from the water, but authorities said he was already dead.

The names of those involved have not been released. Investigators are trying to determine a motive.

The GBI was asked to look into the officer-involved shooting. Agents said this is the 56th such shooting they have been asked to investigate this year.
