A Georgia police officer, who made national headlines in November after helping an injured marathon runner cross the finish line, is now in need of some help himself.

Sgt. John Cain with the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department helped runner Robert McCoy finish the "Rock 'n Roll" marathon in Savannah after falling. McCoy was about a half mile away when he fell. Refusing to quit, Sgt. Cain, who is a 27-year-veteran, came to his aid and helped him out. It was a moment the officer said he'll never forget.

Now, Cain himself is the one asking for help. Just before Christmas he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of pancreatic cancer and needs surgery, but his insurance won't cover all of it. According to his daughter, Cain has been referred to Emory University for surgery, but insurance will only pay a small portion because it's considered out of network.

"Please help my family get through this tough time," Shania Cain said.

The officer said he's determined to win this fight and will pull inspiration from that moment he helped McCoy cross the finish line.

You can donate to Cain's GoFundMe page to help cover some of his medical expenses. His family has set a goal of $200,000 and they have a long way to go.

His family has also set up a Facebook page where you can show your support and keep up with Sgt. Cain's progress.
