Freedom Parkway renamed to honor Congressman John Lewis
ATLANTA - The City of Atlanta held a ceremony to rename Freedom Parkway in honor of Congressman and Civil Rights legend John Lewis.
The street has been renamed to John Lewis Freedom Parkway.
Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms presented Congressman Lewis with the Phoenix Award, which is the City of Atlanta's highest award.
Lewis, who represents Georgia's 5th District, played an important part in the fight for civil rights throughout the 1960's and continues his advocacy today.
Lewis told FOX 5 he was deeply moved by the renaming.
"It means a great deal. And it's my hope and prayer that young people – especially young children – growing up will say 'Why is that parkway named after John Lewis? Who is this guy? What did he do?" he said. "And they will be inspired to stand up, speak up, speak out, and get in good trouble.
The City will also dedicate a Freedom Riders play space.
