FORT STEWART, Ga. - The 3rd Infantry Division of the U.S. Army has released the names of two soldiers killed during a combat training accident at Fort Stewart, located just south of Savannah.
Staff Sgt. Shelbe Butner, 28, and Spc. Jacob Mullen, 25, were identified as the victims, according to the Coastal Courier. Neither soldier was from Georgia, according to military officials. They were assigned to 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division.
The soldiers were operating a tactical vehicle under blackout conditions when it veered off the road and into standing water, resulting in the fatal accident.
Butner was a native of Missouri and had served in the Army for 9 years. Mullen was a native of Maryland and had served in the Army for 7 years.
The Army’s Combat Readiness Center is currently investigating the incident.
