A family is mourning the loss of their loved one after Fulton County Police said 44-year-old Kenneth Oglesby was shot and killed during an attempted carjacking.

Investigators said it happened at around 1:30 Thursday afternoon at the Chevron gas station on Roosevelt Highway.

“He is somebody who is a loving person,” said James Reid, Oglesby’s brother. “When he came in the room you knew he was there, he was the life of the party,” said Reid.

Police said Oglesby was pumping gas when a newer model Toyota Camry pulled up next to Oglesby’s BMW SUV.  Officers said a man got out of the car and started firing shots.

“The words give it up was said,” said Cpl. Maureen Smith with the Fulton County Police Department.  “The victim stumbled and ran inside the Chevron store and at that time he died at the location.”

Cpl. Smith said as Oglesby was running inside the store for help the crook continued to shoot at him and sadly Oglesby died inside the convenience store.

Police released surveillance video before and after the shooting where investigators said you could see one of the men try to take off in Oglesby’s BWM after the shooting and for some reason could not start the car and hopped back inside the Camry that had a temporary tag.

Thursday evening officers said they spotted a car matching the Toyota Camry’s description at Old National Hwy and Old Bill Cook Road. Police said when they tried to do a traffic stop the car led police on a chase before crashing.

Investigators said they did have someone in custody who they were questioning, but could not say whether or not the car and person they are questioning were involved in the earlier incident.

“Just want to make sure they get the person that did it,” said Reid.
