Double arrest for murder of Applebee's manager

Jessalyn Dorsey spoke for the family of murdered Applebee's manager Greg Smith, her cousin.

"It is a hole in our hearts. It will forever be there. There will always be a missing link," said Dorsey.

She and the others gathered with the Fayetteville Police Department and Fayette County District Attorney Scott Ballard.

Police announced the arrests of two suspects for the early June murder of Greg Smith.

Surveillance video showed him leaving the restaurant moments before he was gunned down in his car in the parking lot.

Fayetteville Police also released surveillance of a Chevy Malibu leaving the area.

Tips led to the arrests of Ledarrius Jackson, 25, of Hampton, and Greg Haney, 24, of Jonesboro.

Police said Haney was a former employee of Applebee's who apparently believed Smith might have been transporting restaurant money.

"Applebee's did not take out deposits from the restaurant at night. So he may have thought he knew that money was coming out but it wasn't which makes this even more heinous and stupid," said Lt. Mike Whitlow with the Fayetteville Police Department.

Lt. Whitlow said Haney worked at Applebee's two years before Greg Smith worked there. Whitlow said neither Haney nor Jackson personally knew Smith. Police said robbery appears to be the motive. Fayette County District Attorney Scott Ballard assured the victims’ family his office will pursue justice.

"We will pursue this with all professionalism and zeal. It's our objective to see justice is done not just for this family but for community which has been injured," said Ballard.

Smith leaves behind his fiancé Katasha and their 16-month-old daughter Kennedy. He was an only child with an extended family and many friends.

His cousin Jessalyn Dorsey said the family is focused on seeking justice.

"Our goal is to continue to work with the law enforcement to make sure we are there through this judicial process and we know it's just the beginning," said Dorsey.

Fayetteville Police said both Haney and Jackson are already behind bars at another facility on unrelated charges. But they would not say which jail, citing security concerns.
