Couple's Mercedes-Benz stolen at gunpoint near Piedmont Park

ATLANTA - A couple’s convertible Mercedes Benz was stolen at gunpoint while they waited at a stoplight near Piedmont Park in Atlanta, according to Atlanta Police.

It happened at the corner of 10th Street and Monroe Drive on June 6. Authorities say they have recovered the car, but are still investigating the incident.

The couple moved to town just a few weeks ago. They bought a car, went to dinner, headed home, stopped on Monroe and 10th and got carjacked. All in less than 2 hours.

The owner says he's lucky to be able to tell this story.

"Things can be replaced, cars can be fixed, so we just wanted to not challenge the situation and just get out of it as soon as we could," said Kevin, who does not want to use his last name.

According to a police report, an armed suspect approached the vehicle and demanded that the couple get out of the car. As the suspect pointed a gun at the driver, he also told the passenger to throw his cell phone, which landed on the hood of the car.

Another suspect then got out of the car behind the victim’s car, the statement said. That suspect also got inside of the victim’s vehicle, and both vehicles sped away from the scene, headed north on Monroe Drive.

The victims were not injured, and their grey Mercedes was tracked to a location in Decatur and recovered by police.

"Too late, I noticed the car that pulled up behind us," said Kevin. "A guy got out of the back seat and approached us and held out a gun."

The armed suspect is described as a black male wearing a baseball cap, white t-shirt and dark jeans. No description was given of the other two suspects.

"So this Mercedes of Buckhead employee picked my call at 10:50 at night, remotely helped me set up everything that we were supposed to do the following week and tracked the vehicle almost instantly," Kevin said.

They located the convertible at an apartment complex in Decatur. Police toed the car in for processing. As far as they can tell, there's only a tiny scratch on one surface. And a few personal belongings are missing. Because the couple just moved to town, they had a lot more personal identification papers on them.

"My husband in his briefcase had not only his laptop and cell phone but his passport and his social security card to help get set up here," said Kevin.

He says, while these things are a headache to replace, they are putting it into perspective.

"At least we don't have to replace ourselves," said Kevin.

An eyewitness described the suspects’ vehicle as a white sedan with possible damage to the fender.
