2-year-old drowns in SE Atlanta

A 2-year-old girl accidentally drowned over the weekend in southeast Atlanta, according to Atlanta police.

A 2-year-old has drowned in southeast Atlanta, according to police.

EDITOR'S NOTE: The age of the child has been adjusted based off new information provided to FOX 5 by police. Atlanta police told FOX 5 the child was 2-years-old after the child's mother contacted FOX 5 and told us the police had it wrong. 

What we know:

Police said officers responded to the 2700 block of Memorial Drive SE around 2:40 p.m. on Saturday.

When officers arrived, they said they found a 2-year-old girl who had drowned. She was rushed to the hospital but died.

Police said the drowning appears to be an accident.

A FOX 5 crew on the scene said the drowning appears to have happened at a home with a pool in the backyard. The crew said police had put crime scene tape around the pool. Officers left the home just before 6 p.m. on Saturday. 

What they're saying:

A neighbor told FOX 5 that the people who lived there moved in about five months ago. He had seen children and a woman at the house, but didn't know them well. 

He said he saw a woman flagging down a firetruck in the front yard as he was pulling up from running errands.
