Cherokee deputy arrested for stealing drug evidence
CANTON, Ga. (AP) — A Cherokee County sheriff's deputy has been arrested on charges of stealing drugs from the evidence room.
The sheriff's office announced Monday that 41-year-old Deputy Jeffrey Goettel of Jasper was arrested on charges of theft, drug possession and violation of oath of office. The arrest came after an audit and investigation revealed missing oxycodone and morphine.
Sheriff Roger Garrison says it appears the drugs were stolen for personal use and not resale. It was unclear if Goettel has an attorney.
