Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card changes: What to know

The allure of the credit card points game may be in limbo as annual credit card fees are increasing amid inflation and economic uncertainty.

Chase increased the annual fee on one of its most popular credit cards, the Sapphire Reserve, from $550 to $795 – a 44% jump.

The backstory:

The Chase Sapphire is one of the most popular and common credit cards among travel and dining enthusiasts. It comes in two tiers: the Sapphire Preferred and the Sapphire Reserve, both on the Visa network. The cards are known for their weighty, steely blue metal.

By the numbers:

The Sapphire Preferred is the entry-level card, costing $95 a year. 

The Reserve is a little harder to get, with your income, credit score and relationship with Chase all playing a role. It offers better benefits, but now costs $795 a year to keep active. 

The cost to having Chase’s popular Sapphire Reserve travel credit card has increased 77% since it was introduced in 2016 at a reported $450.

Chase announced new and better benefits alongside the increased annual fee: 

  • A $300 annual travel credit, plus a $500 hotel credit within Chase’s collection
  • 8x points on flights booked through Chase’s travel portal
  • 4x points on flights and hotels booked direct
  • 3x points on all dining purchases
  • A points boost system that doubles the value of points on select hotels and flights within Chase’s travel portal
  • Airport lounge access
  • Credit for Global entry or TSA precheck
  • Annual credits for Apple TV+ and Apple Music, StubHub, Lyft, DoorDash and Peleton

Why you should care:

A travel credit card can make traveling easier and less expensive, and they've helped Americans afford travel amid the pandemic and inflation.

But the rising costs of keeping some of the most popular cards may no longer align with budgets or spending values as inflation persists and President Donald Trump’s tariffs are causing more economic uncertainty.

American Express annual fee

Meanwhile:

American Express also announced this week that major updates were coming to its popular Platinum Card. 

The card currently has an annual fee of $695, which is now less than Chase’s Sapphire Reserve. It also comes with hefty travel perks and other rewards. 

AmEx said it would announce its changes in the fall.
