Social media influencers Andrew and Tristan Tate were arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service on Saturday after British prosecutors filed another round of rape and sexual exploitation charges aimed at the brothers. A Marshals Service spokesperson told the Associated Press that the pair was detained in Miami.

Big picture view:

The new charges, which include seven more rape counts against Andrew Tate, stem from allegations by four more victims of crimes that allegedly took place between July 2010 and August 2017, the Crown Prosecution Service explained.

The New Charges

Including prior charges, Andrew Tate, 39, now faces a total of 10 counts of rape. Among the new allegations against him are three related to sex trafficking, three of assault, and 19 for offenses connected to indecent images of a child and extreme pornography.

Tristan Tate, 38, now faces two more counts of rape, in addition to the three already filed against him, a single count of sexual assault, and three counts related to sex trafficking, prosecutors said.

The backstory:

The previous charges against the brothers were related to allegations from three other victims, the CPS noted. The AP reported they are accused of abusing women between 2012 and 2015 in north London.

What they're saying:

"We have decided to prosecute Andrew and Tristan Tate for further offences including rape, arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation and offences relating to indecent images of a child," Malcolm McHaffie, Head of the Special Crime Division at the Crown Prosecution Service, said.

"These charging decisions followed receipt of a further file of evidence from Bedfordshire Police and bring the total number of alleged victims in this case to seven."

Dig deeper:

The brothers, who are former professional kick-boxers, are proponents of hypermasculinity and have gained millions of followers, particularly among young men and boys, by advocating a life of luxury and misogyny.

The Tate brothers are dual U.S. and British citizens and had moved to Romania in 2016, where they were arrested six years later on allegations of sexual exploitation. They denied the charges and the cases ended up not going forward because of legal and procedural irregularities.
