Atlanta - Southern Rock Band Celebrated at Macon's "Big House" : It's renowned as one of the most iconic bands on popular music history, creating a new kind of music by blurring the lines of rock, country, jazz, and blues. Even today, reverence for The Allman Brothers Band remains strong -- especially in the Georgia city where the group once recorded.
Band member Berry Oakley and his wife, Linda, moved into a large house on Vineville Avenue in Macon in January of 1970, while the group was recording with Capricorn Records. Brothers Duane and Gregg Allman moved in, too, and the residence soon became the literal "home base" for The Allman Brothers Band until 1973. Today, the structure is known as The Big House, and has been transformed into an Allman Brothers Band museum, housing a large collection of band memorabilia including clothes, photos, instruments, and gold records. The museum is open for tours Thursdays through Sundays, from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.
Good Day Atlanta's Paul Milliken recently took a trip down to Macon to check out The Big House, and learned a little more about how the house helped shape the legacy of one of music's most important acts.
