DOJ takes aim at food prices with meatpacking antitrust probe
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche joined Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins and Director of Trade and Manufacturing Peter Navarro on Monday, to announce a massive federal crackdown on anti-competitive practices within the meatpacking industry. The press conference marks a significant escalation in the Trump administration's effort to lower grocery bills, which have surged as the nation faces "exceptional" drought conditions and ongoing trade tensions. Blanche revealed that federal prosecutors have already reviewed more than 3 million documents and conducted hundreds of interviews in what is now being characterized as a criminal antitrust investigation.
